Belief in a cruel God makes for a cruel man

Pictures Taken 16 October 2009
Our civil rights depend on those who are willing to defend them at a moments notice. When Denise heard that anti-Gay protesters from Westboro Baptist Church were going to target San Diego High School she made this sign and hopped on her bike to support the GLT students. Three Cheers for our civil rights minute woman.

A description of the counter-demonstration, "Loud, raucous crowd combats Westboro Baptist Church" can be found at sdnn.com.

This is a demonstration against the budget cuts presently predicted as a response to the current budget predicament. This is a block of potent symbolism. The protesters have their backs to the State building and are facing the entrance of the Social Security office. I have often despaired of the fact that those that were so vocal in their passions regarding Proposition Eight. Churches these days seem to care only for those few moments we spend bound to each other in passion. And could not five a fig for hunger of stomach or soul.

As normal for such events in San Diego, there was a police presence. But unusually the protesters outnumbered the police, rather other way around by several orders of magnitude. The event was reported by 10News. From my brief observance, the protesters were well organized, very impassioned, but fewer than the 500 reported. I hope that this protest represents seeds of California that is both the fulfillment of past hopes and a rejection of present vacuous selfishness.
